Symptoms

Assume that you create a Messaging Record Management (MRM) retention policy to delete items in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environment. The deletion tag in the retention policy is for voice mail only. In this situation, MRM unexpectedly stamps all the messages regardless of type. Additionally, you encounter a performance issue if there are lots of message items in the environment.

Cause

This issue occurs because the default deletion tag stamps all the messages at the tag stage incorrectly, even though these messages do not match the message class in the retention tag.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:

2866475 Description of Update Rollup 2 for Exchange Server 2010 SP3

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
