Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computers that are running in a domain environment.

  • You configure the Folder Redirection Group Policy setting for a folder that is available for redirection. For example, you configure the Folder Redirection Group Policy setting for the AppData folder. Then, the offline file synchronization is enabled by default.

Note The AppData folder is a user-specific folder. For example, the folder might be redirected to the following path:

    \\server\users\user1\AppData

  • You configure the following Group Policy setting to apply to the same "\\server\users\user1\AppData" path:

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\User Profiles\Network directories to sync at Logon/Logoff time only

In this scenario, when you log on to the computers, the logon time is longer than expected. Additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log: Note Before you install the hotfix that is described in this article, you are required to only add subfolders of the "\\server\users\user1\AppData" path to this Group Policy setting.

Cause

This issue occurs because the "Network directories to sync at Logon/Logoff time only" Group Policy setting suspends the specified directory (makes the specified directory offline) and is applied before the Folder Redirection Group Policy when you log on to the computer. When the system tries to apply the Folder Redirection configuration, the system checks whether the target share is available. If the target share does not exist, the system creates a corresponding folder to apply the Folder Redirection configuration. However, when the "Network directories to sync at Logon/Logoff time only" Group Policy setting is applied first, the target share is offline and the system cannot apply the configuration.

Resolution

To resolve this issue in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2, install update 2919355.
To resolve this issue in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, install the hotfix that is described in this article.
