Symptoms

It may take a very long time for a Microsoft SQL Server that is running in a Hyper-V virtual machine to restore a database to a dynamic virtual hard disk (VHD). This problem occurs when the virtual machine is located in a SMB Scale-Out File Server (SOFS) based Windows Server 2012 R2 cluster.

Cause

This problem occurs because of serialization of I/O requests on dynamic VHDs.
