BUG #: 355015 (SHILOH_BUGS)
Symptoms
When you open the SQL Server Service Manager, this error message may occur:
The system cannot find the file specified.
If you click OK the SQL Server Service Manager dialog box opens with the Server name properly listed; however, the Services drop-down listbox is empty.
If you click Start or Continue this error message appears:
The service control action cannot be completed as no service has been selected.
Cause
On computers that have both SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft Data Engine Service Pack 1 installed, if you remove Microsoft Data Engine Version 2.0 Service Pack 1, then the SQL Server Service Manager is left in an inoperable state and the error messages described in the "Symptoms" section occur.
Resolution
To resolve this problem, you must request the Refresh CD for MSDE, whose setup program correctly modifies the registry during an installation or removal of the program.
Workaround
To correct the inoperable state of the SQL Server Service Manager, run the setup from the original SQL Server 2000 installation CD and select the Registry Rebuild option on the Advanced Options tab.
Status
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Data Engine Service Pack 1.
