This article describes update 3085439 for Microsoft Word 2016 that was released on April 12, 2017. This update has a prerequisite.
Be aware that the update on the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home. (How to determine?)
Improvements and fixes
This update fixes the following issues:

Footnote numbers don't appear as superscript characters in printed Word documents, PDF files, or XPS files. Superscript characters are positioned lower than expected.

Equations that are created in Microsoft Equation 3.0 or Math Type are incorrectly positioned, or text within these equations appears clipped at the top in printed documents, PDF files, and XPS files.

This update removes the requirement to enable the Use subpixel position to smooth fonts on screen advanced option in order to display equations correctly.

For Office 2016 Click-to-Run installations, an Update Options item is displayed. For MSI-based installations, the Update Options item isn't displayed.
