256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry

Disclaimer The information in this article is written in response to an announcement by the government of Guatemala about the implementation of daylight saving time in Guatemala for 2006. At the time of this writing, the government of Guatemala has not indicated whether it will continue to use daylight saving time after 2006. Therefore, we recommend that if you decide to modify the computer's registry to update the Time Zone setting, you fully test the solution in a laboratory environment before you deploy this change in a production environment.

Summary

The government of Guatemala has announced the implementation of daylight saving time in Guatemala. Currently, Guatemala uses the (GMT-06:00) Central America time zone. This article contains instructions about how to modify the default behavior of the start date and end date for daylight saving time in this time zone. By following these instructions, you will enable the daylight saving time start date and end date that is implemented in Guatemala.

INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to change the daylight saving time start date and end date for the (GMT-06:00) Central America Time Zone setting in Microsoft Windows to reflect the daylight saving time start date and end date in Guatemala.

More Information

The government of Guatemala has announced the following start date and end date for daylight saving time in Guatemala:

  • Daylight saving time starts on Sunday, April 30, 2006, at 12:00 midnight local standard time.

  • Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, October 01, 2006, at 12:00 midnight local daylight saving time.

Currently, computers in Guatemala use the (GMT-06:00) Central America time zone setting. However, the default values for the (GMT-06:00) Central America time zone setting in Microsoft Windows do not correctly reflect this daylight saving time start date and end date. Therefore, for computers in Guatemala, you must modify the Windows (GMT-06:00) Central America time zone setting to make sure that the computer's clock is correctly updated when daylight saving time starts and ends in Guatemala. For more information about the 2006 daylight saving time start dates and end dates in Guatemala, visit the following Time and Date AS Web site:

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=94Use one of the following methods to modify the default behavior of the (GMT-06:00) Central America time zone setting in Windows to correctly reflect the Guatemalan daylight saving time start date and end date.

Method 1: For home computer users

If you are a home computer user, or if you only have several personal computers, you can manually modify the time zone setting to reflect the Guatemala daylight saving time start date and end date. To do this, follow these steps.Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

On April 30, 2006

  1. Click Start, click Run, type timedate.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.

  2. Click the Time Zone tab, click (GMT-05:00) Bogota, Lima, Quito in the Time Zone list, and then click OK.

On October 1, 2006

  2. Click the Time Zone tab, click (GMT-06:00) Central America in the Time Zone list, and then click OK.

Method 2: For corporate computer users

If you are a computer user for whom the following conditions are true, we recommend that you follow the steps in the "Method 1: For home computer users" section to manually modify your time zone settings:

  • You require calendar synchronization with users who are located outside Guatemala.

  • You have recurring meetings with users who are located outside Guatemala.

Method 1 will help keep your meetings and calendar synchronized with users who are located outside Guatemala.Note As a best practice, we recommend that administrators encourage users to create a printed copy of their calendar information before they modify time zone settings.

The Windows Time Zone Editor tool (Tzedit.exe)

For corporate users and industry personal computer users who do not require calendar synchronization with users who are located outside Guatemala, we recommend the Windows Time Zone Editor (Tzedit.exe) tool to modify the daylight saving time start date and daylight saving time end date in your time zone. The Windows Time Zone Editor tool is included in the Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit Tools. To modify the time zone settings by using this tool, follow these steps.Step 1: Configure the daylight saving time start date and end dateUse the Windows Time Zone Editor tool to modify the time zone settings on one computer or on several computers. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On a computer that has the Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit Tools installed, click Start, click Run, type tzedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

  2. In the Windows Time Zone Editor dialog box, click (GMT-06:00) Central America in the Time Zones list, and then click Edit.

  3. In the Edit Time Zone dialog box, click to select the Automatically set Daylight Saving Time check box.

  4. In the Start Day box, click Last, click Sunday, and then click April.

  5. Leave the default time setting of 12:00:00 AM selected.

  6. In the Last Day box, click First, click Sunday, and then click October.

  7. Leave the default time setting of 12:00:00 AM selected.

  8. In the Daylight Bias box, leave the default setting of +1:00 selected to force the computer clock to move forward by one hour during daylight saving time.

  9. Click OK, and then click Close to close the Windows Time Zone Editor tool.

  10. Click Start, click Run, type timedate.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.

  11. Click the Time Zone tab, click a time zone other than (GMT-06:00) Central America in the Time Zone list, and then click Apply.

  12. In the Time Zone list, click (GMT-06:00) Central America, and then click OK.Note You must perform steps 11 and 12 to force the new time zone settings to take effect.

Step 2: Export the time zone registry settings to other computersWarning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk. If you have to modify the time zone settings on many computers, export the registry information from the computer that you modified in the "Step 1: Configure the daylight saving time start date and end date" section. You can then use the .reg file that you exported to update the time zone information on other computers. To do this, follow these steps.Note Before you deploy the time zone registry information to other computers in your organization, we recommend that you verify whether the time is updated correctly on the computer that you modified in the "Step 1: Configure the daylight saving time start date and end date" section.

  1. On the computer on which you modified the time zone information in the "Step 1: Configure the daylight saving time start date and end date" section, click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

  2. In Registry Editor, follow these steps, depending on the operating system that you are running:

    • If you are running Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows Server 2003, locate and then click the following registry key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\Central America Standard Time

    • If you are running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), locate and then click the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\Central America

  3. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File. Or, on the File menu, click Export.

  4. In the Export Registry File dialog box, click the folder to which you want to export the .reg file, type timezones in the File name box, and then click Save.

  5. Locate and then click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation

  6. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File. Or, on the File menu, click Export.

  7. In the Export Registry File dialog box, click the folder to which you want to export the .reg file, type tzinfo in the File name box, and then click Save.

  8. Exit Registry Editor.

  9. Copy the Timezones.reg and Tzinfo.reg files that you created in step 4 and step 7 to the computers on which you want to update the time zone settings.

  10. On each destination computer, run the Timezones.reg and Tzinfo.reg files to enter the time zone information into the registry.

  11. After the registry information has been successfully entered in the registry of each destination computer, restart each destination computer.

The Daylight Saving Time Update Utility (Timezone.exe)

The Daylight Saving Time Update Utility is included with the Windows Resource Kit Tools for the particular version of Windows that you are running. To obtain the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
