Q7: How does the service pack installation program gather all the required information to update each product?

A7: The service pack installation program follows these steps to gather the required information for the update process:

  1. The installation program scans the following registry subkey to determine the AppPath value for the Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 installation:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Great Plains\8.0\InstallThe installation program displays the AppPath value in the Choose Destination Location window during the installation process.

  2. If the destination folder that appears in the Choose Destination Location window does not point to the correct Microsoft Great Plains installation location, click Browse to change the path of the Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 installation.

Note The ability to click Browse to locate a different destination folder is a new feature in the Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 service pack installation program.

  3. The installation program uses the path that is specified in the Choose Destination Location window to verify whether a valid Dex.ini file and a valid Dynamics.set file exist in the destination location.

  4. The installation program scans the Dynamics.set file to determine the following information:

    • Which products are installed

    • Which installed products must be updated by using the service pack chunk files

  5. The installation program uses the dictionary paths in the Dynamics.set file to verify whether a Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 dictionary exists for all the products that require updating. If all the dictionaries exist, the products that require updating appear in the Service Pack Components section of the Verify Settings window. However, the service pack installation program does not update a particular product if any of the following conditions is true:

    • A dictionary is missing.

    • The version number of a dictionary is not at the same level as Microsoft Great Plains 8.0.

    • A dictionary has been updated already to Service Pack 5.

If any of these conditions is true, the Destination Path value in the Verify Settings window displays the path that is specified in the Choose Destination Location window.

Q8: The chunk files must be copied to the Microsoft Great Plains installation folder so that they are included when Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 starts. When are the chunk files copied?

A8: When you click Next in the Verify Settings window during the service pack installation, a Setup Complete window appears. When the Setup Complete window appears, the service pack chunk files are copied to the destination folder that is specified in the Choose Destination Location window. The following table lists the chunk files that are installed when the corresponding Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 products are updated by the Service Pack 5 installation program.

Q9: How can I determine which scripts are run when I run the Perform Special Upgrade process on the computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server or Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine?

A9: The Perform Special Upgrade process runs the scripts from the Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 service pack installation on the computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server or Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine. After the Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 service pack is installed on the computer that is running SQL Server or Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine, all the SQL scripts are copied to the SQL\UTIL\TASKS folder in the Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 program folder. Individual scripts and the Tasklist.txt file appear in this same folder. The Tasklist.txt file lists all the scripts that are to be run. As additional service packs are installed, the appropriate SQL scripts are added to the Tasklist.txt file.

Q10: How can I tell whether Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 Service Pack 5 is installed successfully?

A10: After Service Pack 5 is installed, you can view the version information for each installed product in Microsoft Business Solutions - Great Plains 8.0 to determine whether the service pack is installed. For more information about how to view the version information for a particular product, see the Service Pack 5 Instructions guide. The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Dynamics File Exchange Server:

80GP_SP5.exe Release Date: September 14, 2006

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

Additionally, the following line is added to the Dex.ini file after Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 Service Pack 5 is installed:

Dictionary Version=8.00g73Q11: I want to install additional Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 products, such as Collections Management or EFT for Receivables Management. What occurs if I install these products after I install Service Pack 5?

A11: Service Pack 5 updates a product only if the following conditions are true:

  • The product is listed in the Dynamics.set file.

  • The product is not updated already to Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 Service Pack 5.

Therefore, if you install an additional product after you install Service Pack 5, you must run the Service Pack 5 installation program again. The Service Pack 5 installation program parses the Dynamics.set file to determine whether an additional product is installed. The installation program then determines whether the additional product is updated by Service Pack 5. Additionally, the installation program recognizes that the previously updated programs are already updated by Service Pack 5. Therefore, the installation program does not update the previously installed programs.

If any scripts must be run for the newly installed product, the additional scripts are added to the TaskList.txt file and to the SQL\UTIL\TASKS folder in the Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 installation folder. The Perform Special Upgrade process must be run for these new scripts.

Q12: How do I install Service Pack 5 on multiple Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 installations that I have configured on a test computer?

A12: You can use the Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 Service Pack 5 installation program to update multiple Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 installations. By default, the Service Pack 5 installation program performs the installation to the location in the AppPath value that is specified in the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Great Plains\8.0\InstallHowever, in the Choose Destination Location window, you can click Browse to modify the destination folder for the service pack installation. Use this option to specify the Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 installation that you want to update to Service Pack 5.

Q13. How do I install Service Pack 5 on a terminal server?

A13: You can install Service Pack 5 on a terminal server by using the procedure that is described in the Service Pack 5 Instructions guide.

However, if you have a customized installation that has the Dex.ini file or the Dynamics.set file located in the profile for each user, follow these steps to install Service Pack 5.

Note These steps assume that the terminal server is a computer other than the computer that acts as the database server.

  1. Copy one Dynamics.set file and one Dex.ini file from a user profile to the Microsoft Great Plains folder on the terminal server.

Note The Dynamics.set file must include all the products that the users require. The service pack installation program updates the products that are included in the Dynamics.set file.

  2. Install the service pack by following the information that is in the Service Pack 5 Instructions guide.

  3. Start Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 to add the updated code.

  4. After the Service Pack 5 chunk files are installed, verify the product version information. To do this, follow the information that is in the answer to question 10: "How can I tell whether Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 Service Pack 5 is installed successfully?"

  5. Rename the Dynamics.set file and the Dex.ini file that you copied to the installation folder on the terminal server in step 1.

  6. Add the following line to the Dex.ini file in all user profile locations:

    Dictionary Version=8.00g73

Q14: During the installation of Service Pack 5, what should I do if I receive the following message when I click Next in the Choose Destination Location window: "The required information for installing this service pack could not be found at this location. Enter a location where a valid Dynamics.set and Dex.ini file are located"?

A14: To troubleshoot this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Verify whether the destination folder that is specified in the Choose Destination Location window is correct. The correct destination folder is specified in the AppPath value in the registry for the installation program. By default, this registry entry is in the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Great Plains\8.0\InstallIf the destination folder path that is in the Choose Destination Location window is incorrect, click Browse to locate the correct path.

  2. Verify whether the Dex.ini file appears in the destination folder.

  3. Verify whether the Dynamics.set file appears in the destination folder.

Q15: When I start Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 Utilities on the computer that is running SQL Server or that is running Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine, the Perform Special Update option does not appear in the Additional Tasks window. What should I do?

A15: To troubleshoot this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Verify whether you are running Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 Utilities on the computer on which the Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 Client/Server installation was performed. To do this, verify whether the SQL folder appears in the Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 installation folder.

  2. Verify whether the TASKS folder appears in the SQL\UTIL folder in the Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 installation folder.

  3. Verify whether the Tasklist.txt file appears in the SQL\UTIL\TASKS folder.

Note The Tasklist.txt folder contains the list of scripts that must be run.

  4. Reinstall SQL Objects. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Locate the SQL folder in the main Great Plains installation directory, and then rename the folder.

    2. Begin the installation of Great Plains by using the Great Plains installation CD. Continue through the first steps until you reach the Select Great Plains Components screen.

    3. Click to clear all check boxes except the SQL Objects check box, and then continue the installation. The installation will create a new SQL folder in the Great Plains directory.

    4. After the installation is complete, locate the Util folder in the old SQL folder that was renamed. Copy the Tasks folder that is located in the Util folder to the corresponding location in the new SQL folder that is located in the Great Plains installation directory.

Note If the Tasks folder is not present, the Service Pack may not have been installed.

    5. In the renamed SQL folder, open the Company folder, and then copy the Procs.cmp file to the corresponding location in the new SQL folder.

    6. In the renamed SQL folder, open the System folder, and then copy the Procs.sys file to the corresponding location in the new SQL folder.

    7. Relaunch Utilities. To do this, drag the Dynutils.set file over the top of the Dynamics.exe file in the Great Plains directory.

Q16: Are translated releases of Service Pack 5 available for Microsoft Great Plains 8.0?

A16: Yes. To obtain translated service packs for Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 and for Microsoft Business Solutions - Great Plains Standard 8.0, visit the following Microsoft Web sites:

https://mbs.microsoft.com/partnersource/products/greatplains/downloads/servicepack/greatplains80_trans_servicepacks.htm?printpage=falseThese service packs update the following language-specific installations:

  • French-Canadian

  • Spanish-Latin America

Q17: I am installing Service Pack 5 on the computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server. When I run the Perform Special Upgrade operation, my company does not appear in the Special Upgrade window. What should I do?

A17: The Special Upgrade window displays the companies that are in the DU000099 table in the DYNAMICS database. If a company is missing from the DU000099 table, insert the company record into the table. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Make a complete backup of the DYNAMICS database.

  2. Run the following script in SQL Query Analyzer or in the Support Administrator Console.

INSERT INTO DYNAMICS..DU000099 (CMPNYNAM, UPGRSTAT, db_name, versionMajor, versionMinor) VALUES ('Company Name', 0, 'Company INTERID', 8, 0)

    Notes

    • In this script, perform the following actions:

      • Replace Company Name with the name of the company for which you want to insert a record. For example, replace Company Name with The World Online Inc.

      • Replace Company INTERID with the INTERID value of the company for which you want to insert a record. For example, replace Company INTERID with TWO.

    • If the Dynamics (System) database option is missing from the Special Upgrade window, there may be no scripts available to run against the DYNAMICS database. View the contents of the TaskList.txt file that is in the Great Plains\SQL\UTIL\TASKS folder to determine whether a script that has a file name extension of .sys appears in the folder. If a script that has a file name extension of .sys appears, follow steps 1 and 2 in this answer to question 17 to insert the Dynamics (System) database into the DU000099 table. If a script that has a file name extension of .SYS does not appear, there are no scripts for the Dynamics (System) database. In this situation, you do not have to perform any actions.

Q18: I am installing Service Pack 5 on the computer that is running SQL Server. When I run the Perform Special Upgrade operation, I receive an error message, and a red "X" appears next to my company database. What should I do?

A18: The Perform Special Upgrade process runs the scripts that are listed in the TaskList.txt file. The TaskList.txt file is located in the Great Plains\SQL\UTIL\TASKS folder. If one script fails, the remaining scripts that are in the TaskList.txt file are not run. The Perform Special Upgrade process stops if an error occurs.

If an error occurs, you must determine which script failed. Sometimes, the error message that appears directs you to the failed script. If the error message does not direct you to the failed script, run each script until you determine which script failed.

Scripts that have a file name extension of .SYS are scripts for the DYNAMICS database. Scripts that have a file name extension of .CMP are scripts for the company databases. If the Perform Special Upgrade process fails on the system database, you can run each .SYS script against the system database. If the Perform Special Upgrade process fails on a company database, you can run each .CMP script against the company database.

For example, to run a script against a company database, follow these steps for the appropriate program.

Microsoft SQL Server

If you are running SQL Server, you can use SQL Query Analyzer to run each script. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Start Windows Explorer. Then locate the Great Plains\SQL\UTIL\TASKS folder.

  2. Start SQL Query Analyzer.

  3. Copy the first .CMP script into a blank query window.

  4. On the Edit menu, click Replace, and then replace all instances of %SysDbName% with DYNAMICS.

  5. Run the script against the company database that fails. If the script runs successfully, follow steps 2 and 3 to run the next script against the company database.

  6. If a .CMP script fails, view the results that are shown in SQL Query Analyzer to determine the reason that the script failed.

Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine

If you are running Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine, and if SQL Query Analyzer is not available, you can use the MS-DOS scripting tool that is named OSQL to run each script. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine, click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.

  2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    OSQL –S SERVERNAME –U sa –P sa_password –d companyDatabase -i "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Business Solutions\Great Plains\SQL\UTIL\TASKS\script.cmp"Notes

    • In this command, perform the following actions:

      • Replace SERVERNAME with the name of the computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine.

      • Replace sa_password with the password for the sa account.

      • Replace companyDatabase with the name of the company database against which you want to run the script. For example, replace companyDatabase with TWO.

      • Replace script.cmp with the name of the .CMP script that you want to run.

    • This command uses the default path for the TASKS folder on the computer on which the Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 Client/Server installation has been performed. If the path of the TASKS folder differs on the computer, modify this command accordingly.

Additionally, for each .CMP script that you want to run, you must first replace the variables for the system database name with the actual database name. To do this, open the script by using a text editor such as Notepad, and then replace each instance of %SysDbName% with DYNAMICS.

Q19: When I install Service Pack 5, I receive the following error message at 51 percent of the way through the installation process: "An Error Occurred During the Move Data Process -115." This error occurs during the Dexterity Runtime part of the service pack installation. What should I do?

A19: This error occurs if Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 is running during the installation of Service Pack 5. To resolve this problem, exit Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 before you start the service pack installation.

If Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 is not running, and if the computer on which you install Service Pack 5 is a terminal server, start Windows Task Manager to determine whether any Terminal Services clients have started Microsoft Great Plains 8.0. You must also exit these instances of Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 before you install Service Pack 5.

Q20: I am installing Service Pack 5 on the computer that is running SQL Server. When I run the Perform Special Upgrade operation, I receive the following error message: "Error Updating COMPANY NAME." The only available option is to click OK. However, and a red "X" now appears next to my company database. What should I do?

A20: This error message generally indicates that the company that you are trying to update does not exist in the DYNAMICS database or in the sysdatabases table of the Master database. The Perform Special Upgrade process uses the DU000099 table to identify the company databases that must be updated. If a company database was removed at some point, the entry for that database might not be correctly removed from the DU000099 table.

To troubleshoot this problem, verify whether the company actually exists. To do this, run the following script in SQL Query Analyzer or in the Support Administrator Console.

SELECT CMPANYID, CMPNYNAM, INTERID from DYNAMICS..SY01500

If the affected company does not appear in the query results, delete the company record from the DU000099 table. To do this, run the following script in SQL Query Analyzer or in the Support Administrator Console.

DELETE DYNAMICS..DU000099 where DEX_ROW_ID = XXXX

Note In this script, replace XXXX with the DEX_ROW_ID value of the company record that you want to remove.

The issue that is described in the Introduction section does not apply to Dynamics GP 10.0.
