Error message description

When you try to use the Online Media or Internet TV features of Media Center Extender on a Windows Vista-based computer, you may receive the following error message:

Video Error Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly, please restart windows media center or restart the computer

When you try to use the Online Media or Internet TV features of Media Center Extender on a Windows 7-based computer, Windows Media Center shows a "Busy" cursor followed by a black screen before returning to the Windows Media Center Gallery.This problem occurs when a network router blocks the network packets that are sent by an online service to deliver media content such as movies or music. Some network routers block some media-based network packets that are sent by some online services. This article helps you fix the problem.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, install Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista, and then update the Online Media settings for Media Center Extender.

Step 1: Update Windows Vista (if required)

Step 2: Update the Online Media settings for Media Center Extender

Change the Windows Vista registry settings for Online Media.To have us update the registry for you, go to the "Fix it for me" section. If you’d rather update the registry yourself, go to the "Let me fix it myself" section.

  1. Click Start , type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.User Account Control permission If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaCenterPeripheral

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.

  4. Type MFNETSOURCE_DISABLE_UDP, and then press ENTER.

  5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.

  6. Type 1, and then click OK.

  7. Exit Registry Editor.
