SUMMARY

This article describes the software update that applies to versions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 that are mentioned in the "Applies to" section. When Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 are released this software update will be a prerequisite to install the service packs. Additionally, this update improves reliability when you install or remove Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2.

Update information

Updates to the Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 installation software are included in this update. The installation software is the component that handles the installation and the removal of software updates, language packs, optional Windows features, and service packs. This update is necessary to successfully install and to remove Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 on all versions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. This update is not necessary to successfully install the service pack if you install the full file version of the service pack. The full file version of the service pack includes this update.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

Note You must install this update package on a Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 operating system that is running. You cannot install this update package on an offline image.

This update will be made available on Windows Update. After the update is available on Windows Update, you will be able to obtain this update. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Security.
  2. Under Windows Update, click Check for updates.
Important
  • You must install update 937287 before you install this update.
  • If any other updates are waiting for a restart, the restart must occur before you install this update.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites to install this update on Windows Server 2008.

To apply this hotfix on a computer that is running Windows Vista, you must have the update described in KB 937287 installed or you must have Vista Service Pack 1 installed.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other previously released hotfixes.

Update removal information

You cannot remove this update.

Known Issue

If you install this update through Windows Update, you may receive error 800F082F.

This update cannot be installed with other updates. Therefore, if you previously installed other updates without a restart, and then you try to install this update, you may receive error 800F082F. To resolve this issue, restart your computer, and then install this update again.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.
