Bug #: 50003415 (SQL Hotfix)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You create a new node for a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 failover cluster. Then, you try to add a second node to the failover cluster by installing SQL Server 2008 from the same deployment share that you used for the first node. In this scenario, the operation fails, and you cannot add the second node. When this problem occurs, you receive the following error message:

SQL Server Setup encountered the following error:

The current SKU is invalid.

Cause

This problem occurs when you install SQL Server 2008 from a deployment share that uses a custom Defaultsetup.ini file, and this custom file includes the product key for SQL Server 2008. Additionally, this problem may occur when you install a second node for SQL Server 2008 from installation media that has a custom Defaultsetup.ini file that includes the product key.

Resolution

The fix for this problem was first released in Cumulative Update 1. For more information about how to obtain this cumulative update package for SQL Server 2008, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

956717 Cumulative update package 1 for SQL Server 2008

Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release. We recommend that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. Note After you install Cumulative Update 1 on each node of the failover cluster, you must install SQL Server 2008 from the deployment share on each node of the failover cluster.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
