Error message when you upgrade Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2008 R2: "These Windows features might not work properly after the upgrade"

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2008 R2, you receive the following error message:

These Windows features might not work properly after the upgrade. We recommend turning off features before upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel and search for "turn Windows features on or off".

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the release version of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 are not supported on Windows Server 2008 R2.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Add Remove Programs item in Control Panel to uninstall Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 before you upgrade from Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2008 R2.
