FIX: You cannot open an XPS document by using the Microsoft XPS Viewer on a Windows Vista x64 edition-based computer that has .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installed

SYMPTOMS

You install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a Windows Vista x64 edition-based computer. When you try to open an XML Paper Specification (XPS) document, it cannot be opened by the Microsoft XPS Viewer successfully. However, you are prompted to select an application to open the file.

Note The Microsoft XPS Viewer is integrated into Windows Internet Explorer in Windows Vista.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of an error in the process that points to the appropriate application to view the XPS file.

RESOLUTION

Update information

To resolve this problem, obtain the update for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. To obtain the update for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Prerequisites

You must have .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 or .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 installed to apply this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.
