Symptoms

When you use the Visual Studio 2008 IDE to manipulate a SQL Server Compact 3.5 Database file that is larger than 128 Megabytes, you receive the following error message:

The database file is larger than the configured maximum database size.

You experience this problem in one of the following scenarios.

Scenario 1

  • You open Server Explorer in the Visual Studio IDE.

  • You right-click Data Connections and then you click Add Connection.

  • You select Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 as the data source and then you connect to a database that is larger than 128 Megabytes.

  • You click Advanced and then you set the Max Database Size field to a number that is larger than 128 Megabytes.

  • You expand the tables in the database, you right-click a table and then you click Edit Table Schema in the shortcut menu.

Scenario 2

  • You open a project that uses the Windows Forms Application template in the Visual Studio IDE.

  • You right-click the project in Solution Explorer, and then you add a new item that uses the Local Database Cache template.

  • You set a Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 database as the client connection in the Configure Data Synchronization wizard.

  • You import tables to the database.

Cause

This problem occurs because the default value of the maxdatabasesize property is 128 Megabytes. However, this default value is not overridden even if you set the property explicitly in the Advanced Properties window.
