SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a Web page that uses the window.open method to open a new Windows Internet Explorer window.
  • You code the Web page to use the window.focus or window.blur method to switch the focus to the new Internet Explorer window.
In this scenario, when a user accesses this Web page by using Internet Explorer 8, the focus does not switch to the new Internet Explorer window as expected.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of the Loosely-Coupled Internet Explorer (LCIE) architectural design in Internet Explorer 8. This design enables the window.open method to open a new window in a separate tab process or in the same tab process. However, when a new window is created by a different Internet Explorer process (Iexplorer.exe) other than its parent, various issues can occur. These issues include the issue that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.

  • Windows Vista
  • Windows Server 2008

You have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
