Microsoft has released an update for the Windows Telephony Application Programming Interface (TAPI). This article describes the update and provides details about the file manifests.
This update implements a defense-in-depth change that some customers may decide to deploy. The update is intended primarily for the following systems:
Systems that are running Windows Telephony Application Programming Interfaces (TAPI). Systems that are running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 and all supported editions of Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008, systems that are running IIS, or IIS web servers that enable users to upload code. SQL Server systems where untrusted users are granted privileged account access. Customers who do not run IIS or SQL, or customers who have implemented the workarounds that are listed in the Security Advisory, should evaluate this defense-in-depth update before they apply the update.
This update changes the Access Control Lists (ACLs) for the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony
By default, Network Service (NS) users explicitly have full permission to this registry entry. After you install this update, NS users will have Read-Only access to this registry entry. The update will apply the same ACLs to all subkeys of the registry entry.
To apply the defense-in-depth change for the Windows Telephony Application Programming Interface (TAPI) To update the TAPI component with the defense-in-depth update, you must install the following updates.
