You cannot install AD DS in Windows Server 2008 in a Windows Server 2003-based domain if another computer that is in the same domain has MSCS installedArticle ID: 982438 - View products that this article applies to. On This PageSYMPTOMSConsider the following scenario:
Event ID: 1791 CAUSEThis issue occurs because the Cluster service on the computer that is running Windows Server 2003 SP2 calculates the buffer size for the service principal name (SPN) of the Cluster service incorrectly. This behavior causes the SPN entry not to have a null terminator in the Active Directory database. Therefore, some random characters are appended to the valid SPN names in the Active Directory database. When AD DS is installed on the computer that is running Windows Server 2008, an Active Directory replication occurs from the domain controller that is running Windows Server 2003 to the computer that is running Windows Server 2008. However, the Active Directory replication fails because of these invalid SPN names. Therefore, the issue occurs. RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue, install this hotfix on the affected cluster nodes that are running Windows Server 2003 SP2.
