SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7, you create two volumes on some dynamic disks.
  • You configure one volume to store the shadow copy storage area (also known as "diff area") of the other volume.
  • You enable the Snapshot Protection mode on both volumes.
  • You create snapshots at set intervals. After a while, the volume that has its shadow copy storage area stored on the other volume goes offline because the storage space on the volume that stores the shadow copy storage area is used up.
  • You extend the volume that has used up its storage space, and you try to bring the volume that has its shadow copy storage area stored on the other volume online.
In this scenario, you cannot bring the volume that has its shadow copy storage area stored on the other volume online. Additionally, you receive the following events in the System log:

Log Name: System
Source: volsnap
Event ID: 87
Level: Error
Computer: ComputerName
Description:
Volume volume is offline for shadow copy protection. The shadow copy storage has been exhausted. Please try clearing the protection fault or restart the computer followed by an increase of the shadow copy storage or a removal of unneeded shadow copies. If all else fails, revert out of shadow copy protection mode to reclaim the use of the volume while losing the shadow copies.

Event Source: VolSnap
Event Category: None
Event ID: 88
Computer: ComputerName
Description:
The shadow copy of volume <volume> is offline for shadow copy protection. The shadow copy storage was used up before conditions permitted it to increase. Try clearing the protection fault or restart the computer. If it still fails, revert out of shadow copy protection mode to reclaim the use of the volume while losing the shadow copies.

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems.
