Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You run a SQL Server 2008 R2 Distributed Query Processor four-part linked server query SELECT statement against a DB2 for Windows V10.5 database.

  • The data is stored in DB2 for Windows V10.5 as LONG VARCHAR.

In this scenario, you receive the following error message:

Linked server supplied inconsistent metadata for a column.
The column was reported to have a DBTYPE of 128 at compile time and 129 at run time.

Cause

The Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2 and the Microsoft DRDA Application Requester Client for DB2 don't convert DB2 for Windows V10.5 LONG VARCHAR data type to the correct Microsoft OLE DB data type consistently. This issue occurs when both of the following are processed:

  • The column schema

  • The query result sets

Resolution

This issue is fixed in Cumulative Update 2 for Host Integration Server 2016.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
