Symptoms

After administrators set a max number of Exchange accounts to a nonzero value in the policy section, you can still set some Exchange accounts that exceed the limit.

Resolution

To fix this issue, install November 10, 2015, update for Outlook 2013 (KB3101488) or Description of the security update for Outlook 2016: April 11, 2017, and then follow these steps to specify a max number of Exchange account in Outlook 2013.

Important
Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you change the registry incorrectly. Before you change it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

  1. Exit all Microsoft Office applications.

  2. Start Registry Editor:

    • In Windows 10, go to Start, enter regedit in the Search Windows box, and then select regedit.exe in the search results.

    • In Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, if you're using a mouse, move it to the upper-right corner, go to Search, enter regedit in the search text box, and then select regedit.exe in the search results.

    • In Windows 7, go to Start, enter regedit in the Search programs and files text box, and then select regedit.exe in the search results.

  3. Locate and then select the following registry entry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\policies\MICROSOFT\EXCHANGE

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ policies \MICROSOFT\EXCHANGE

  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then select DWORD Value.

  5. Enter MaxNumExchange, and then press the Enter key.

  6. In the Details pane, press and hold (or right-click) MaxNumExchange, and then select Modify.

  7. In the Value data box, enter a nonzero value, and then select OK.

    Notes

    • Both these policy keys will take precedence over the following registry key if either exists.

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\EXCHANGE\MaxNumExchange

    • The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE policy will take precedence over the HKEY_CURRENT_USER policy if both exist.

    • If no key exists, the default value of 10 is used as the maximum number of Exchange account.

  8. Exit Registry Editor.
