The Math AutoCorrect feature represents a significant advancement in the simplification of creating mathematical equations and expressions. It provides users with the ability to insert special mathematical characters and symbols effortlessly through the use of predefined commands and their associated Unicode values. This functionality not only enhances productivity by reducing the time spent navigating complex menu options for symbol insertion but also guarantees consistent formatting throughout the document.

This article will provide a comprehensive list of mathematical symbols supported by Math AutoCorrect, detailing their descriptions, associated Unicode values, and corresponding commands to enable effective utilization of this feature.

Important Notes and Tips

  • These codes are available in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote for Windows and Mac, and in Outlook for Windows. Some codes are not available in older versions. On mobile, they are only available in Word. They are not supported in web apps.
  • To find a Symbol name, Unicode value, or AutoCorrect command on this webpage, use Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F on a Mac).
  • The names of the symbols in the document may not always correspond to the symbol names which are read by a screen reader.
  • The AutoCorrect codes are case sensitive.
  • To open the equation tool, select Insert, then Equation. Or use the shortcut Alt+Equals (Windows) or Ctrl+Equals (Mac). An equation box should appear on the screen.
  • In Word, make sure Unicode conversion mode is selected in equation settings. If LaTeX mode is chosen, the AutoCorrect commands will not work. Unicode conversion mode in a word document.
  • Type one of the Math AutoCorrect codes from the charts below, followed by a delimiting term (often the SPACEBAR key, sometimes mathematical operators such as the + sign). For instance, typing \infty or \infinity followed by SPACEBAR will convert to the infinity symbol (∞).
  • For more details about using Math AutoCorrect commands, refer to the DAISY Math Consortium’s List of Commonly Used Math AutoCorrect Entries in Word 365.
  • In Word for Windows, you can also enter symbols by typing their Unicode hexadecimal value without the U+ prefix and then pressing Alt+X. For example, typing 22BF followed by Alt+X inserts the right triangle symbol.
  • To learn how to insert mathematical symbols using the equation toolbar (instead of using keystrokes), refer to Insert mathematical symbols.

Reset the AutoCorrect list to the built-in list

If you have customized the Math AutoCorrect list by adding, deleting, or replacing any items in the past, items provided in the latest version may not take effect. To reset the list so that it includes items in the latest version without your customizations, follow these steps:

On Windows:

  1. Open PowerShell.
  2. Run the following command:
    del $env:appdata\Microsoft\Office\mso0127.acl
  3. Restart the app.

On Mac:

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Run the following command:
    rm ~/Library/Group\ Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/Microsoft\ Office\ ACL\ [Math]
  3. Restart the app.

After the restart, the app will load the latest AutoCorrect list.
