Manage agents in SharePoint

All site members can create their own agents and use them. These agents can be used, edited, or shared by other site members with editing permissions. As a site owner, you can choose a main agent for the site.

Approve agents

You do not need to approve agents for a site. Agents created in SharePoint aren't automatically listed or published anywhere. Users can discover agents by manually navigating to .agent files to use them, or they can be placed on the SharePoint page using the Agent link web part. There is a folder structure found under Site Assets > CopilotsApproved, which can be used to keep track of Approved agents. Site Assets > Copilots is also the folder location for agents created from the "New agent" command on Site pages.

Note, this is a change in behavior as of June 2026.

Set an agent as the main agent for the site

You can select an agent to be the main agent for the site. This agent will open when users select the Agent icon from the global header. To do this:

  1. Select the Gear icon from the global header to open the Site AI settings panel.
  2. Choose a Main agent. You can choose from the ready-made-agent and any agent created in SharePoint (.agent file) on the site. If the site is in the Copilot in SharePoint public preview, the ready-made-agent is named Copilot, otherwise, it is named after the site.

If you do not make any changes, the ready-made-agent is the main agent for the site.

Delete an agent

Site members with edit permissions can delete an agent like deleting other files:

  1. Locate the .agent file. Learn more on how to find the .agent file here.
  2. Select the context menu by selecting the ellipsis (the three dots) next to the .agent file.
  3. Select Delete.

Note

You can't delete the ready-made-agent that comes with the SharePoint site.

Monitor agents

If you have at least site visitor's permissions (site admins, site owners, site members, and site visitors), you can monitor agents on a SharePoint site with the following approaches:

  • File statistics: Select an individual .agent file and use the Details pane to view its file statistics.
  • Search: Use Search to find all agents on a site for bulk actions.
  • Site usage: Use Site usage to see the most popular files and agents on their sites.

If you have permissions of a SharePoint admin or more, see here for ways to monitor agent usage across sites.
