Open .eml, .msg, and .oft files in new Outlook and Outlook on the web

You can use drag and drop to open email messages saved with the extension .eml, .msg, .oft in new Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the web.
Note:Â To open .msg and .oft files, your account needs to have a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription.
Drag and drop in new Outlook

Open new Outlook.

Open File Explorer.

Select a .eml, .msg, or .oft file.​​​​​​

Drag and drop the file onto the reading pane area.
Other ways to open these file types in new Outlook
You can also right-click or double-click the .eml, .msg, or .oft file to open them in new Outlook.Â
Right-click From Windows Explorer right-click the .eml, .msg, or .oft file, select Open with >, and then select Outlook (new).
Double-click From Windows Explorer double-click the .eml, .msg, or .oft file. If the file doesn't open in new Outlook, it might not be set as the default app for these file types. To update this, go to Change default programs in Windows.
