Compare Microsoft storage quotas
Mailbox storage includes your Outlook.com emails, contacts, and calendar items. Cloud storage includes your email attachments, files, and photos in OneDrive.

To check your current usage and quotas, open the Microsoft storage area of your account dashboard.
What happens when you exceed your Microsoft storage quota
If you exceed your Microsoft storage quota, some Microsoft services stop working.
- OneDrive: You can't upload, edit, or sync new files, such as Camera Roll. Your existing files remain but are read-only.
- Outlook.com: You can't send or receive email if you exceed either your cloud storage quota or mailbox storage quota. Incoming emails are returned to the sender and must be resent after you free up or buy more storage.
- Microsoft Teams: You can't send or receive messages that contain attachments.
- After three months: If you remain over your OneDrive storage limit, your OneDrive account is frozen.
- After six months: Microsoft might delete your OneDrive and all files within it. Once deleted, these files are non-recoverable.

Your OneDrive taskbar or menu bar icon shows the status of your storage:
- Cloud icon with a yellow warning triangle:
means your OneDrive storage is nearly full. - Cloud icon with a red circle and white minus sign:
means you exceeded your storage allowance.
Manage your storage
To prevent or resolve storage limit issues, buy more storage or free up space.
Buy more storage
If you use free Microsoft storage, buy a Microsoft 365 subscription.
If you have a Microsoft 365 Basic subscription, switch to a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, or Pro subscription.
If you have a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, or Pro subscription, you can add up to 10 TB of OneDrive cloud storage. Only the subscription account holder can add storage.
Tip
After purchasing additional OneDrive storage, it can take up to 24 hours for your new quota to show. If your quota hasn’t updated after 48 hours, contact support.
Free up cloud storage
- View the largest files on your OneDrive.
- Reduce the size of your Loop workspace by deleting unneeded pages and page-version history. For more options, see Reduce Loop storage usage.
- Open your Designer projects, hover over an image, select
, and then select Delete. For more information, see Delete Designer files.

Free up mailbox storage
To see how much mailbox storage you used and quickly clear up space, open your Outlook.com Settings
and search for Storage.
Consumer mailbox storage is limited to 100 GB. If you need a mailbox larger than 100 GB, see Microsoft 365 enterprise plans.
