You can use Clipchamp for personal accounts or work and school accounts in Chrome on a Chromebook. There's no desktop app to install. Follow this guide to open Clipchamp, add your media, and save a finished video to keep or share.
Before you start, connect to the internet and check that ChromeOS is up to date. For instructions, see Update your Chromebook's operating system. If your work or school manages your Chromebook and you can't update it, contact your IT admin.
To start, open a new Clipchamp project
Open Chrome and choose the entry point for your account:
- Personal account: Go to app.clipchamp.com and sign in with your personal Microsoft account.
- Work or school account: Open Clipchamp through Microsoft 365 and sign in with your work or school account. You need access from your organization. For more information, see How to access Microsoft Clipchamp with your work or school account.
After you sign in, create a new video project or open an existing one. Personal and work or school accounts have separate projects, so use the account you normally use for the project you want to edit.
Add media to edit on a Chromebook
Important
Direct imports from Google Drive, Dropbox, and XBOX have been removed from Clipchamp for personal accounts. You can still import from your device or OneDrive.
If downloads are allowed, you can download the media to your Chromebook and import it as local files instead. For details, see Adding media from the Downloads folder.
Import media files from your device or OneDrive
- In your Clipchamp project, select My media in the sidebar, and then select Import media.
- Select the video, image, or audio files you want to use, and then select Open.
- Wait for the files to appear in My media. To start editing, drag them onto the timeline.
To import from OneDrive instead, select the arrow next to Import media, and then select OneDrive. Follow the prompts to choose your files. This option is available for both personal and work or school accounts.
Adding media from the Downloads folder
Downloads is the default download location on a Chromebook, but your browser might use a different folder or ask you where to save each file. To find your files, open the Files app from the Launcher, and then open Downloads or the folder you chose.
For media in Google Drive, follow the Google Drive download steps, including extracting a ZIP file if needed. Find the downloaded files in the Files app, then import them from your device.
If Download isn't available, the file owner or your organization might have restricted downloads. Ask the owner or your IT admin for help.
Keep a backup of important source files and finished videos outside Downloads, such as in cloud storage or on an external drive. ChromeOS can remove downloaded files to free up space. On a managed Chromebook, use a storage location your organization permits. For more help finding, saving, and extracting files, see Open, save, or delete files on your Chromebook.
Exporting and sharing your video on a Chromebook
When you're happy with your edits, export a finished video:
- Select Export in the editor.
- In the Export video dialog, choose a video quality, such as 1080p, and then select Export.
- When the export finishes, select Save to your computer to keep a local copy. If a save dialog opens, choose a folder and save the file.
Find the exported file in Downloads or the folder you chose. You can then upload it to cloud storage or share it using a service you prefer.
In a work or school account, your organization's policies or information protection settings can restrict local downloads. If you can't download a finished video, ask your IT admin about your options.
Troubleshooting
Editing and export performance depend on your Chromebook's hardware and your project's size and complexity. Larger or higher-resolution files can take longer to work with.
