Whether answering questions or taking care of mundane tasks, Teams apps save you and others time to focus on what's most important.

Tip: Not sure what to say to an app? Keep in mind each app has a set of commands it understands and responds to. You can see these commands when you start typing a message to an app.

Add an app

To add an app in Teams:

  • Select Apps  Add an app or tab button on the left side of Teams. Search for your favorite app or browse the app categories to find new ones.

  • In a channel or group chat, select Actions and apps  Cross icon at top of the screen in the compose box to search and find apps.

Note: If you're a team owner, you can add apps that receive and send messages in conversations without being @mentioned. Before you add this type of app, make sure you understand the permissions it's requesting.

Chat with an app in a chat

Apps can contribute to chat conversations, providing important updates or helping teams organize their work.

Typically, you or someone else @mentions an app to interact with it, but some apps can play a more proactive role in conversations. These apps receive messages and respond without an @mention. (Whoever adds this kind of app—whether it's you or another member—must consent to the required app permissions on for the conversation.)

To chat with an app in a chat:

  1. Type @ and the app's name in the text box.

  2. Chat with the app and use it to assign tasks, reminders, or whatever task the app assists with.
