Use Timeline view to see your plan’s schedule and adjust when work happens. View task dates, reschedule tasks by moving their bars, and change task duration by resizing them.
Open Timeline view
- Open your plan in Planner.
- Select Timeline.
Understand task bars and date indicators
What appears on the timeline depends on which dates a task has:
| Dates entered | What appears |
|---|---|
| Start and finish dates | A task bar spanning the scheduled start and finish dates. |
| Start date only or finish date only | A partial task bar. |
| Due date | A separate due-date indicator, appears whether or not the task also has a start or finish date. |
A task with only a due date appears with only a due-date indicator rather than a task bar.
Task bars also reflect task status. A completed task has a fully filled bar.
Finish dates and due dates
A task’s finish date is when it is scheduled to end. Its due date represents its deadline and appears separately on the timeline.
Note: Moving or resizing a task bar changes its scheduled dates, not its due date.
Reschedule a task
To move a task to a different part of your schedule:
- Find the task bar on the timeline.
- Drag the bar to its new position.
The task’s start and finish dates update to match its new position.
Change a task’s duration
To adjust how long a task is scheduled to take, drag to resize its task bar.
The task’s scheduled dates update to reflect the change.
Change the zoom level
Use the timeline’s zoom control to select the level of detail you need:
- Day: View your schedule at a daily scale.
- Week: View your schedule at a weekly scale.
- Month: View your schedule at a monthly scale.
