Insert a SIM card into your Surface

Get a cellular data connection on your Surface Pro 5G for Business 13-inch (12th Edition), Surface Pro 5G 13-inch (11th Edition), Surface Pro 5G for Business 13-inch (11th Edition), Surface Laptop for Business 5G (7th Edition), Surface Pro 10 with 5G for Business, Surface Pro 9 with 5G, Surface Pro 8 with LTE Advanced, Surface Pro 7+ with LTE Advanced, Surface Pro (5th Gen) with LTE Advanced,  Surface Pro X, or Surface Go with LTE Advanced. You'll need a nano SIM from your mobile carrier before you get started.

Before you start

The following Surface devices come with a SIM ejector tool.

  • Surface Go with LTE Advanced
  • Surface Pro (5th Gen) with LTE Advanced
  • Surface Pro 7+ with LTE Advanced
  • Surface Pro 8 with LTE Advanced
  • Surface Pro 9 with 5G
  • Surface Laptop for Business 5G (7th Edition)

To find it, look for an instruction card in the box your Surface was packaged in. You’ll need this tool to place a SIM card in your Surface.

SIM ejector tool

 

Surface Pro 5G for Business 13-inch (12th Edition), Surface Pro (11th Edition) with 5G, and Surface Pro 10 with 5G for Business do not need a tool to access the SIM card slot. The SIM card slot can be found behind the SSD door for these devices. 

To access the SIM card slot, follow the instructions for your Surface model listed below:

Surface Pro 5G for Business 13-inch (12th Edition), Surface Pro 5G 13-inch (11th Edition), Surface Pro 5G for Business 13-inch (11th Edition)

  1. Place your Surface Pro's screen on a clean surface and lift the kickstand to reveal the SSD/SIM door.
  2. Press down on the divot on top of the SSD door until it pops open. Lift it up and out of the device.
  3. Push your SIM card into the SIM card slot until it clicks.
  4. Slot the replacement SSD/SIM Door into the slot and press down to install. Ensure the side with the divot is inserted as shown.

Surface Pro 10 with 5G for Business

  1. Place your Surface Pro 10 with 5G for Business screen on a clean surface and lift the kickstand to reveal the SSD/SIM door.
  2. Press down on the divot on top of the SSD door until it pops open. Lift it up and out of the device.
  3. Push your SIM card into the SIM card slot until it clicks.
  4. Slot the replacement SSD/SIM Door into the slot and press down to install. Ensure the side with the divot is inserted as shown.

Surface Laptop for Business 5G (7th Edition)

  1. Locate your SIM card tray on the side of the laptop near the rear right corner before the Surface Connect port.
  2. Insert the SIM ejector tool into the small hole and gently press in to eject the SIM card tray. When you’re done, slide the SIM ejector tool back into the instruction card so you can find it again later.
  3. Place the SIM card face up in the SIM card tray. Make sure the small notch in the corner of the SIM card matches the one in the SIM card tray so that it fits properly.
  4. Slide the SIM card tray back into the SIM card slot until it clicks. The small hole in the SIM card tray should be closest to front of the laptop. Make sure the SIM card tray slides in smoothly—don't force it.

Surface Pro 9 with 5G

  1. Place your Surface Pro 9 with 5G screen on a table and lift the kickstand to reveal the SIM door.
  2. Insert the included SIM ejector tool into the small hole on the SIM door to detach it.
  3. Push your SIM card into the SIM card slot until it clicks.
  4. Slide the SIM door into place, then press down until it clicks.

Surface Pro 8 with LTE Advanced

  1. Place your Surface Pro 8 screen on a table and lift the kickstand to reveal the SIM door. 
  2. Insert the included SIM ejector tool into the small hole on the SIM door to detach it.
  3. Push your SIM card into the SIM card slot until it clicks.
  4. Slide the SIM door into place, then press down until it clicks. 

Surface Pro 7+ with LTE Advanced

Surface Pro 7+ models have a SIM card or a microSD card slot in the same position on the device. The Surface Pro 7+ with LTE Advanced has a SIM tray, indicated by a small hole that ejects it. For other models, the microSD card slot doesn't have a cover and won't support a SIM card.     

  1. Place the screen of your Surface Pro 7+ on a table and lift the kickstand.
  2. On the left side of your Surface, in the area closest to the hinge, find the SIM card tray.
  3. Insert the included SIM ejector tool into the small hole on the SIM door to detach it.
  4. Remove the SIM card tray from the slot. When you remove it, keep it face up.
  5. Place the SIM card face up in the SIM card tray. Make sure the small notch in the corner of the SIM card matches the one in the SIM card tray so that it fits properly. The words or logo on the SIM card should be facing up.
  6. Slide the SIM card tray back into the SIM card slot until it clicks. The small hole in the SIM card tray should be closest to the bottom-right corner. Make sure the SIM card tray slides in smoothly—don't force it.

Surface Pro (5th Gen) with LTE Advanced

  1. With your Surface Pro (5th Gen) with LTE Advanced facing down, gently pull out the kickstand. The kickstand has the Microsoft logo on the back.

  2. Locate your SIM card tray near the bottom-right corner and under the kickstand of your Surface Pro (5th Gen) with LTE Advanced.

  3. Insert the SIM ejector tool into the small hole and gently press in to eject the SIM card tray. When you’re done, slide the SIM ejector tool back into the instruction card so you can find it again later.

  4. Remove the SIM card tray from the slot. When you remove it, keep it face-up.

  5. Place the SIM card face up in the SIM card tray. Make sure the small notch in the corner of the SIM card matches the one in the SIM card tray so that it fits properly. The words or logo on the SIM card should be facing up.

  6. Slide the SIM card tray back into the SIM card slot until it clicks. The small hole in the SIM card tray should be closest to the bottom-right corner. Make sure the SIM card tray slides in smoothly—don't force it.

Surface Pro X

  1. Place your Surface Pro X screen on a table and lift the kickstand to reveal the SIM door. A Surface Pro X with the kickstand lifted to reveal a SIM door.

  2. Insert the included SIM ejector tool into the small hole on the SIM door to detach it.

Surface Go with LTE Advanced

These steps apply to Surface Go and Surface Go 2 models with LTE Advanced. 

  1. With your Surface Go with LTE Advanced screen facing you, turn the left edge towards you until you see the SIM card tray.

  2. Insert the SIM ejector tool into the small hole and gently press in until the SIM card tray is ejected. When you're done, keep your SIM ejector tool somewhere safe so you can find it again later.

  3. Remove the SIM card tray from the slot. When you remove it, keep it face up.
  4. Place the SIM card in the SIM card tray. Make sure that the notches on the SIM card and the tray line up. The words or logo on the SIM card should be facing up.
