Connect a Class Notebook to Canvas
Applies To
Important
The classic LTI 1.1 integration for OneNote Class Notebook reaches end of life on September 17, 2026. Moving forward, Class Notebook is available in Learning Management Systems through the new, unified Microsoft 365 LTI.
For administrators
- To enable Class Notebook in your LMS, you must complete first-time configuration and deploy the Microsoft 365 LTI in the desired LMS courses
- Canvas users need matching Microsoft 365 accounts. For roster sync to work, the Canvas Email field should match the user's Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Entra user principal name (UPN) or primary email address.
- Educators and students sign in with their Microsoft 365 account the first time they use Microsoft 365 LTI in Canvas.
For Canvas deployment details, see Deploy Microsoft 365 LTI in Canvas.
Create a connected Class Notebook in Canvas
- Open your Canvas course.
- Select the Microsoft 365 LTI or Microsoft Education link from the course navigation. The exact label and placement depend on how your administrator deployed the tool.
- Select OneNote Class Notebook.
- If prompted, sign in with your school Microsoft 365 account.
- Create a new Class Notebook for the course or open the notebook that is already connected.
For educator setup steps, see Set up Class Notebook in Microsoft 365 LTI.
How roster sync works
Microsoft 365 LTI uses the Canvas course roster and Microsoft Entra ID user matching to connect educators and learners to their Microsoft 365 accounts. This helps Class Notebook create the educator and student notebook spaces from the course context.
- Students should be added to or removed from the Canvas course roster. The Class Notebook experience in Microsoft 365 LTI uses that course roster.
- Co-teachers and educators should be listed in Canvas with accounts that match their Microsoft 365 identities.
- If someone does not appear where expected, check the Canvas roster and confirm the Canvas email matches the user's Microsoft 365 UPN or primary email address.
For Canvas and Microsoft 365 administrators
Administrators can deploy Microsoft 365 LTI for all courses in a Canvas account or for a single course. The Canvas setup includes enabling the Microsoft Education developer key, adding the app by Client ID, completing first-time Microsoft 365 LTI configuration, and choosing whether the tool appears in course navigation or the Rich Content Editor toolbar.
For the full admin flow, browser settings, and Canvas-specific configuration details, use Deploy Microsoft 365 LTI in Canvas.
