A fax application that uses the Fax service client APIs may crash randomly on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

Symptoms


When you run a fax application that uses the Fax service client APIs on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, the application may crash randomly.

This issue occurs if you leave some settings blank in the Sender Information dialog box.

Note To open this dialog box, start Windows Fax and Scan. Then, on the Tools menu, click Sender Information.

Cause


This issue occurs because of a problem in Fxsapi.dll. This causes an access violation if some settings in the Sender Information dialog box are blank.

Resolution


Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
