A scheduled task is forcibly canceled in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008

Applies to: Windows Vista BusinessWindows Vista EnterpriseWindows Vista Home Basic

Symptoms

You schedule a task on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. However, the scheduled task is forcibly canceled by the TaskEng.exe process. Additionally, the following events are logged:

Cause

This issue occurs because the task engine has a 5-minute timer which starts after task execution ends and when there are no other active tasks. The task engine shuts down if no new tasks are triggered by the time that this timer expires. If a task is scheduled to run at the same moment that this timer expires, the task execution is canceled and the issue that is described in the "Symptoms" section occurs.

Resolution
