Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
-
You have a touch-enabled tablet computer that is running Windows 7.
-
You start an on-screen keyboard, and then press Shift+Caps Lock to enable Caps Lock mode.
-
You run an application that creates a new desktop by using the CreateDesktop() function.
-
The new desktop displays a new instance of an on-screen keyboard.
In this scenario, the key labels on the keyboard are displayed in lowercase. However, when you type, the output is uppercase.
Cause
This issue occurs because the Tablet PC Input Panel process (Tabtip.exe) uses the current state of the keyboard flags when a new desktop is initialized. However, Tabtip.exe cannot handle a situation in which Caps Lock is already on. Therefore, the software keyboard initializes in the "Normal (0)" state instead of the "Capslock ON (2)" state, and you experience the issue that is described in the "Symptoms" section.
Resolution
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.
