Update adds support for Windows 8-based client computers in System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2

Applies to: Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2

An update is available that adds support for Windows 8-based client computers in Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Additionally, this update adds Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 to the supported platform list in the following features:
  • Software distribution
  • Software update management
  • Desired Configuration Management (DCM)
This update also fixes the following issues:
  • Discovery Data Manager (DDM) does not create Client Configuration Requests (CCRs) for Windows 8-based computers that are discovered by using the Active Directory System Discovery.
  • When the system processes a new power profile, the SMS Agent Host service (Ccmexec.exe) or the WMI Provider Host service (Wmiprvse.exe) stops unexpectedly.

More Information

When you install this update, the AI_UPDATE_SERVICE_POINT service restarts. However, if the service does not restart within 30 seconds, the restart operation will time out. In this situation, extend the service startup time-out value to 150 seconds. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following registry subkey:
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type ServicesPipeTimeout, and then press Enter.
  5. Right-click ServicesPipeTimeout, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type the desired time-out value in milliseconds (ms), and then click OK. For example, if the desired time-out value is 150 seconds, type 150000 in the Value data box.
  7. On the File menu, click Exit.
  8. Restart the computer.

Note You must restart the computer for the Service Control Manager to apply this change.
Note The hotfix package can be installed on a System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 site server that is running an x86-based or x64-based version of an operating system.

Important To use the Administrator Console on a Windows 8 system, the .Net Framework 3.5 must be enabled. Otherwise, the Administrator Console does not start, and you receive the following error message:
MMC cannot initialize the snap-in.
If this issue occurs, uninstall the Administrator Console, enable the .NET Framework 3.5, and then reinstall the Administrator Console. You can enable the .NET Framework by using the "Programs and Features" item in Control Panel. Additionally, you can enable the .Net Framework by running the following command:
dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /Source:X:\sources\sxs
Note In this command, "X" is a placeholder for the drive that contains the Windows installation media.
