Issues that this hotfix package fixes

  • When you open a document that contains thousands of complex text boxes in Word 2013, the maximum number of graphics device interface (GDI) objects is reached. Therefore, Word 2013 may freeze, crash, or perform poorly. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:
    There is insufficient memory or disk space. Word cannot display the requested font.
  • You cannot open an embedded Word document that contains a floating embedded OLE object. For example, when you try to open the embedded Word document from an Excel workbook, you receive the following error message:
    Microsoft Excel can't start the application required to open this object. An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Would you like to repair this feature now?

Registry information

After you install this hotfix package, you can follow these steps to enable this hotfix:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Options\
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type DisableDisplayPrecaching, and then press Enter.
  5. In the Details pane, right-click DisableDisplayPrecaching, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.
