Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You run an application that issues multiple I/O operations against UNC paths to servers that are running Windows Server 2012.
  • You run the application under high load conditions.
  • The servers use the Server Message Block (SMB) version 2.x or 3.0 protocol.

In this scenario, you experience the following symptoms:
  • Some user-mode processes may stop responding indefinitely.
  • The processes are unresponsive to Task Manager.
  • The servers must be restarted to unblock the processes.

Cause

This problem occurs because of a race condition in the SMB version 2.x or 3.0 client between issuing an SMB request and receiving a network disconnect indication.
