The text in a text box does not appear in Word


Symptoms


When you type text in an inserted text box in Microsoft Word, the text does not appear.

Cause


This problem occurs when you change the Microsoft Windows display settings to use any of the following color schemes:
  • High Contrast Black
  • High Contrast Black (large)
  • High Contrast Black (extra large)

Resolution


To resolve this problem, select one of the High Contrast Black color schemes from the Accessibility Properties dialog box. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Accessibility Options.
  3. On the Display tab, click to select the Use High Contrast check box, and then click Settings.
  4. Under High Contrast color schemes, click Custom. In the Custom list, click the High Contrast Black color scheme that you want.
  5. Click OK, then click Apply, and then click OK.
Text boxes that are inserted in Word will now have a black background color.

Workaround


To work around this problem, select a dark fill color for the text box. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Word.
  2. In Microsoft Word 2002, click Text Box on the Insert menu, and then click and drag to insert a text box.

    In Microsoft Office Word 2003, point to Text Box on the
    Insert menu, and then click
    Horizontal.

    In Microsoft Office Word 2007, click the
    Insert tab, click Text Box in the
    Text group, and then select a text box.
  3. In Word 2003 or in Word 2002, click Text Box on the Format menu.

    In Word 2007, click the Formattab, and then click Advanced Tools in the Text Box Styles group to open the Format Text Box dialog box.
  4. On the Colors and Lines tab, click the color that you want under Fill in the Color list. For example, click Black.
  5. Click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

More Information


When you select any of the High Contrast Black color schemes in the Display Properties dialog box, an inserted text box does not use the default background color (black). The white text that you type does not appear against the white background of the text box.

To view these display settings, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Display.
  3. In the Display Properties dialog box, on the Appearance tab, note the option selected in the Scheme list.
