Symptoms

Assume that you put a computer that has a USB device connected into hibernate mode. After you resume the computer from hibernation, the USB disk drive letter is not displayed in Windows Explorer.

Workaround

To work around this issue, press F5 to update the view in Windows Explorer.

More Information

This issue occurs because the Windows Explorer process does not handle device removal and device arrival messages correctly.

When the issue occurs, you are still able to access the USB disk by using the following methods:

  • You can copy from and to the USB disk by using the Command Prompt.

  • Applications that use the GetLogicalDrives() function can return the correct drive letter list.
