FIX: Operating system version information that is returned from SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 or SQL Server 2012 is incorrect in Windows 8.1

Applies to: SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2SQL Server 2008 R2 DeveloperSQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise More

Symptoms

Assume that you use Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 or SQL Server 2012 on a computer that has Windows 8.1 installed. When you use the @@version parameter and the xp_msver system stored procedure to find the operating system version information, incorrect information is returned.

Cause

The issue occurs because Windows 8.1 has deprecated GetVersion and GetVersion (Ex) APIs. These APIs do not return the correct operating system version number.

Resolution

After you apply this fix, SQL Server will receive the operating system information for @@version parameter from the registry. SQL Server will also correct the information in the xp_msversystem stored procedure.

This issue was first fixed in the following cumulative update of SQL Server:

Cumulative Update 9 for SQL Server 2012 SP1

Cumulative Update 16 for SQL Server 2008 SP3

Cumulative Update 11 for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
