This article describes an update that makes the cluster disks log the identity information about the faulty disks to the system event log on a Windows Server 2012 R2-based failover cluster. Therefore, you can easily identify which disk in the storage pool should be removed or replaced.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You create a Windows Server 2012 R2-based failover cluster that contains at least two cluster nodes.

  • You create a Storage Spaces pool that contains at least two failover clustering-capable disks.

  • You add the Storage Spaces pool to the failover cluster and bring the Storage Spaces resource online.

  • The Storage Spaces resource tries to come online on a different cluster node after an unplanned failover event occurs.

In this scenario, the Storage Spaces resource cannot preempt existing SCSI Persistent Reservations (PR) because of a disk error on any of the disks in the storage pool. Therefore, the Storage Spaces resource cannot go online.
