System freezes when you use a domain account to start an application in Windows

Symptoms


This issue occurs when you install a service that associates with the domain account and when the service startup type is automatic in Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, Windows RT, or Windows Server 2012.

If this issue occurs during system start process, the system freezes and does not start as expected.

Cause


This issue occurs because the Service Control Manager (SCM) tries to start a service that associates with the domain account for authentication. During authentication, the DNS Client service is needed. SCM cannot start any other new services while one is already being started. Therefore, a deadlock occurs and causes this issue.

Resolution


To resolve this issue, install the December 2014 update rollup for Windows RT, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012. Or, install the hotfix that is described in this article.
