October 13, 2015, update for Outlook 2013 (KB3085579)

This article describes update KB3085579 for Microsoft Outlook 2013 that was released on October 13, 2015. This update also applies to Office Home and Student 2013 RT, and other versions of Office that contain Outlook 2013. This update has a prerequisite.

Be aware that the update in Download Center applies to Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2013. It doesn't apply to the Office 2013 Click-to-Run editions such as Microsoft Office 365 Home. (How to determine?)

Improvements and fixes


  • Adds the Message Preview section so that users can change the font of email message preview in Outlook 2013.
  • Changes interfaces from Apps to Add-Ins and from Add-Ins to COM Add-Ins in Outlook 2013.
  • Translates some terms in multiple languages to make sure that the meaning is accurate.
  • Fixes the following issues:
    • When you work in Outlook 2013 that has multiple .pst files attached, Outlook 2013 may crash.
    • The default reminder time for new all day events is inconsistent, depending on how the events are created. For example, the default reminder time is different when you create a new all day event in different views (day view or month view).
    • When you use the Recover Deleted Items function to recover a folder in Outlook 2013, the folder name is truncated to the first character.
    • When you complete a recurring task on different computers in Outlook 2013, duplicated tasks are displayed.
    • Outlook 2013 may crash when it synchronizes date with Exchange server in the background.
    • When you cancel a meeting by using the BeforeItemMoveEvent event in Outlook 2013, Outlook 2013 may crash.
    • When you open Outlook 2013 that has an Exchange account set on a computer that's joined to a domain, you receive repeatedly prompt for credentials. This issue occurs if the domain of the Exchange account is different with the computer domain.
    • When you view free/busy information in Outlook 2013, Outlook 2013 may crash intermittently.
    • You can still start Outlook 2013 to safe mode after you have June 9, 2015, update for Outlook 2013 (KB3054855) installed and the DisableSafeMode key set.
    • When you edit a contact and then reopen the contact in Outlook 2013, the contact photo is deleted.
    • When you try to send a meeting request that has an attachment in Outlook 2013, the save operation is called by the ItemSend event, and you receive the following error message:
      The operation failed.

To determine whether your Office installation is Click-to-Run or MSI-based, follow these steps:
  1. Open Microsoft Outlook 2013.
  2. On the File menu, select Account.
  3. For Office 2013 Click-to-Run installations, an Update Options item is displayed. For MSI-based installations, the Update Options item is not displayed.
