SECURITY_CRYPTO_CONTEXT_MUTEX waits cause SQL Server 2016 to stop responding to client requests in SQL Server 2014 and 2016

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 and 2016 may stop responding to client requests. This issue occurs when there are a significant number of SECURITY_CRYPTO_CONTEXT_MUTEX waits occurring.

When you view the waits, their statistics may resemble the following.
wait_type waiting_tasks_count wait_time_ms max_wait_time_ms signal_wait_time_ms

The fix for this issue is included in the following cumulative updates for SQL Server:

Hotfix for SQL Server 2014 SP2

A supported update is available. We recommend that all customers apply this update.

Note After you install this update, the build will be updated to 12.0.5578.0.
