Symptoms

If you have recently upgraded your instance of SQL Server Reporting Services (SharePoint mode) to Cumulative Update 5 (CU5) for SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 3 (SP3), you may experience an issue in which your Alerts or Subscriptions are not working as expected. Additionally, you may also notice the following error message logged in the Reporting Services log files:

w3wp!library!1ac!10/05/2016-09:02:29:: e ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.InvalidReportServerDatabaseException: , Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.InvalidReportServerDatabaseException: The version of the report server database is either in a format that is not valid, or it cannot be read. The found version is '164'. The expected version is '163'.;

Cause

This issue occurs because of a change that was made to the database that incremented the database version number during the installation of CU5 for SQL Server 2012 SP3.

Resolution

Because of the nature of this issue, uninstalling CU5 for SQL Server 2012 SP3 will not resolve this issue completely. We recommend that you contact Microsoft Support to obtain a hotfix that will resolve this issue completely. This hotfix will also be included as part of our next cumulative update.

Workaround

NoteĀ If you previously installed Cumulative Update 12 for SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 or a later release on your Reporting Services (SharePoint mode) instance, you cannot use this workaround.

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Uninstall CU5 for SQL Server 2012 SP3.

  2. Install Cumulative Update 4 for SQL Server 2012 SP3.

  3. Delete your existing Reporting Services service application by using SharePoint Administration. Then, create another application.

  4. Deploy all your reports, data sources, and other items. Alerting and Subscriptions should now work as expected.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
