Here’s an overview of the tiles on the Start Strip on your Microsoft Band. There are tiles for health and fitness, communication, social media, news, and more.

Tiles and the Start Strip

Microsoft Band Start Strip

The Start Strip is the row of tiles on your Band. Each tile represents a set of features for doing things like tracking a run or a workout, reading snippets of your latest incoming email and text messages, and checking on the weather.

You can choose which tiles show on your Band and in what order. For some tiles, you can also choose whether to receive notifications when new info arrives. See Manage tiles and notifications for more info.

Press the power button on your Band and swipe left on the touchscreen to view your tiles.

Tap a tile to open it. Then, depending on the tile, you can:

    • Swipe left, right, up, or down, or tap to see more or make selections.
    • Press the action button to start an action.

To close a tile and return to the Start Strip, tap the left edge of the screen.

Here’s an overview of the tiles and what you can do with them:

The Me Tile

The Me Tile on Microsoft Band

Everything starts with the Me Tile.

  • Press the power button on your Band to get to the Me Tile. If you don’t see the tile, tap the left edge of the screen to go back to the Start Strip, then swipe right to return to the Me Tile.
  • Drag the Me Tile to the right to see the status bar for battery level, heart rate (if the daily heart monitor is turned on), and Bluetooth® (if Bluetooth is turned on).
  • To see stats for steps you’ve taken, distance traveled, calories burned, and your current heart rate, do either of the following:
    • Press the action button to cycle through your stats.
    • Tap, then swipe left to see these stats.

Band and fitness tiles

The Bike Tile
The Guided Workout Tile
Use the Bike Tile to:
  • Mark the beginning and end of your outdoors and stationary bike rides.
Check your heart rate, calories burned, and other health stats. For outdoor rides, you can also track speed, distance, route, and elevation.

Recommended for:

  • Outdoor biking
  • Stationary biking (no GPS)
Use the Guided Workout Tile to:
  • Be prompted through a premade or custom workout routine you choose in the Microsoft Band app on your phone and download to your Band.
Check stats like your heart rate (high, low, average, and recovery) and calories burned.
The Exercise Tile
The Run Tile

Use the Exercise Tile to:

  • Mark the beginning and end of an exercise routine that doesn’t cover distance, like push-ups or weight lifting.
Check stats like your heart rate (high, low, average, and recovery) and calories burned from your last exercise.

Recommended for activities like:

  • Air squats
  • Elliptical machine
  • Push-ups
  • Rowing machine
  • Sit-ups
  • Stair climbing
  • Weight lifting

Use the Run Tile to:

  • Mark the beginning and end of an activity that covers distance, like a run or hike, or an aerobics class.
Check stats like run time, pace, distance, and calories burned.

Recommended for activities like:

  • Walking, hiking, and running
  • Cross-country skiing
  • Aerobics and Step aerobics (no GPS)
  • Dancing (no GPS)
  • Treadmill (no GPS)
  • Racquetball and tennis (no GPS)
The Golf Tile
The Sleep Tile
Use the Golf Tile to:
  • Record your shots, check the distance to the green, and view your score.
Check stats like play time, number of steps, and calories burned.

Recommended for:

  • Golfing
  • Driving range (no GPS)
  • Putting green (no GPS)

Use the Explore Tile to:

  • Mark the beginning and end of your hike, walk, or trek.

Check stats like heart rate, calories burned, elevation changes, and more.

Recommended for activities like:

  • Hiking, walking, and exploring
The UV Tile
The Sleep Tile
Use the UV Tile to:
  • Check the current level of ultraviolet light.
  • Set a UV exposure reminder (Microsoft Band 2 only).
Use the Sleep Tile to:
  • Track how long and how well you sleep.

Check stats like how long you slept, how many times you woke up, and calories burned.

Settings and tools tiles

The Alarms and Timer Tile
The Settings Tile
Tap the Alarm & Timer Tile to set an alarm or timer, or to use the stopwatch.
The Settings Tile is your path to many Band settings––everything from brightness and haptic alert levels to airplane mode and 24-hour clock.
  • The Settings Tile is always farthest to the right on your Band.
  • You can change some Band settings in the Microsoft Band app on your phone.

Communication tiles

Get notifications of incoming calls, messages, and email, and keep on schedule with calendar reminders.

The Calendar Tile
The Calls Tile
Tap the Calendar Tile to glance at what’s next on your schedule.
Tap the Calls Tile to see who’s calling or view a history of calls.
Mail app tile
The Messaging Tile
Tap the Mail Tile to see a few lines of your most recent emails.
Tap the Messaging Tile to see a few lines of your most recent SMS text messages.

Social media tiles

These tiles provide notifications when there’s something new in your social network.

The Facebook Tile
The Facebook Messenger Tile
Tap the Facebook Tile to see what’s new in your Facebook feed.
Tap the Facebook Messenger Tile to see a few lines of your most recent Facebook messages.
The Twitter Tile
Tap the Twitter Tile to see your most recent incoming tweets.

News and information tiles

The Cortana Tile
The Finance Tile
Tap the Cortana Tile for news notifications (Windows Phone only).
Tap the Finance Tile for info about your favorite stocks, indices, and more.
The Notifications Center Tile
The Weather Tile
Tap the Notifications Center Tile to see info from your phone’s Notification Center, like turn-by-turn directions from a navigation app or Amber Alerts.

Tap the Weather Tile for the current and forecast weather.

More tiles

The Starbucks Tile

Tap the Starbucks Tile and hold your Band to the scanner at the Starbucks® cash register to pay with your Starbucks Card.

Tiles to download

In addition to the built-in tiles, you can download more tiles to keep track of your favorite sports teams, view your Xbox gaming stats, and more. Browse available tiles and install your favorites from the gallery. Here’s how:

Step 1: On your phone, tap the Microsoft Band app. 
Step 2: Tap Menu   > Manage Tiles.
If you already have the maximum 13 tiles on your Band, you will need to remove one. Tap the toggle next to a tile to turn it off and tap Save

Step 3:

At the bottom of the list, tap Go to gallery.

Step 4:

Choose a tile, tap Download, and confirm the installation.

If you’re having other issues with downloaded tiles, contact the tile’s developer. Here’s how:

Step 1:

Open the Microsoft Band app.

Step 2: Tap Menu   > Manage Tiles > Go to gallery
Step 3: Tap the tile, and at the bottom of the tile page you’re inquiring about, tap contact us.
On the form or in your email, include your phone’s operating system, the Microsoft Band app version number, and the firmware version of your Microsoft Band or Microsoft Band 2.
