Description of the security update for Excel 2016: April 10, 2018

Applies to: Excel 2016

This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Office file. To learn more about these vulnerabilities, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2018-1029.

Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Excel 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see determining your Office version).

Improvements and fixes

This security update contains improvements and fixes for the following nonsecurity issues:

  • When you scroll a split pane worksheet through touch manipulation, the pane contents may not redraw correctly.
  • When an Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) pivot table contains multiple filters and one of these filters has a multi-select with partial selection, the drill-through action returns duplicated rows and an inaccurate result set.
  • When you open a worksheet that contains an external reference that includes metadata, for example a rich data type value in Microsoft Excel 2016, Excel crashes.
  • When you drag files that are from Microsoft Windows common controls pack (MSCOMCTL.OCX) to a ListView control, the ListView control doesn't react in the 32-bit version of Excel.
  • Provides better translation of “Run on |” for the German version of Excel 2016.
