FIX: An access violation occurs when you create an index with page compression in SQL Server

Applies to: SQL Server 2014 EnterpriseSQL Server 2016 EnterpriseSQL Server 2016 Service Pack 1

You create an index on a large table (tens or hundreds of thousands of rows) in Microsoft SQL Server. If you specify the option DATA_COMPRESSION=PAGE in the SQL query statement, the Create Index process may fail, and you may receive an Access Violation (AV) error.

This issue is fixed in tbe following cumulative updates for SQL Server 2016:

Cumulative Update 4 for SQL Server 2016 SP1

Cumulative Update 6 for SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 2.
