Network outage and performance degradation after you install WMF 5.1 in Windows Server 2012 R2

Applies to: Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

Symptoms

Assume that you use a Hyper-V Network Virtualization (HNV) Gateway with Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) clusters on a Windows Server 2012 R2-based server. After you install Windows Management Framework (WMF) 5.1 (KB3191564) on the server, you may experience the following decreased Network Address Translation (NAT) and cluster performance issues:

  • The connectivity for tenants is lost.
  • You can't run a failover for a HNV Gateway cluster when a role is in the Offline status.
  • Tenants can't add, delete, or modify VM networks when you run a failover for a Gateway cluster.
  • You can't add, delete, or modify VM NAT and VPN rules.

Note These issues are especially obvious when you use Cloud Platform System (CPS) Premium.

Cause

These issues occur because the Get-RemoteAccessConfiguration PowerShell cmdlet fails to return valid data. This causes I/O performance issues. The failure also causes the RRAS configuration of the HNV Gateway to become unsynchronized. A failover may result in a network outage that prevents tenants from managing VM resources. Therefore, you can detect these issues when the following conditions are true:

  • There is no output after you run the Get-RemoteAccessConfiguration PowerShell cmdlet.
  • Thousands of 0-byte files are written to the cluster's shared volume.

Resolution

To fix this issue, get the stand-alone package for this update 4033587 from the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
