This security update resolves a remote code execution vulnerability that exists in Microsoft Word software if it does not correctly handle objects in memory. To learn more about the vulnerability, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2019-1201.
Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Microsoft Word 2016 on the computer.
Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see What version of Office am I using?).
Improvements and fixes
This security update contains the following improvement and fix:
- You can now save Word documents that have restricted areas and required document properties to SharePoint document libraries. You can update document properties by using the SharePoint Property Panel while the document is in Restricted mode, and save the changes back to SharePoint.
- Fix: If you save a document that contains certain emoji characters, and the Save options "Embed fonts in the file" and "Embed only the characters used in the document" are both enabled, Word may crash.
