Description of the security update for Excel 2016: May 12, 2020

This security update resolves a remote code execution vulnerability that exists in Microsoft Excel software if the software does not correctly handle objects in memory. To learn more about the vulnerability, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2020-0901.

Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Excel 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see What version of Office am I using?).

Improvements and fixes

This security update contains fixes for the following nonsecurity issues:
  • The execution of ribbon callbacks to Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros can cause the ScreenUpdating property to unexpectedly be reset to True.
  • A crash occurs when you use the IBM Cognos Analysis for Microsoft Excel add-in.
  • A crash occurs intermittently when you use the Find and Replace feature in the Korean language version of Excel.
