Assume that you use Cumulative Update 5 (CU5) for Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later versions, and you create a database that has Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) enabled. When you use Virtual Backup Device Interface (VDI) to create a compressed backup of the database (by setting MAXTRANSFERSIZE > 64K), and try to restore from the compressed backup or run RESTORE VERIFYONLY against the compressed backup, you receive the following error message:
Error 3241, Severity 16, State 0
The media family on device '<VDI Device Name>' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
