  • If you're signed into your Windows device with a work or school account, see Users signed in with a work or school account.

Copilot in Windows, with the help of Microsoft Copilot (previously named Bing Chat), provides you with centralized generative AI assistance directly from your Windows device. For information about how to use Copilot in Windows, see Welcome to Copilot in Windows.

Copilot in Windows uses your data to help it formulate relevant responses to your requests. For example, that data can be the words that you type or speak when chatting with Copilot in Windows or can be the page that you’re looking at in Microsoft Edge. Because it’s your data, we want you to know what Copilot in Windows does with that data.

Chat history

Chat history is a list of the requests and responses, including any images, from your interactions with Copilot in Windows. Your chat history can be found by using the Chat history icon within the Copilot pane or at copilot.microsoft.com. You can delete previous chats individually at any time.

Microsoft Edge page content

Microsoft Edge can provide browsing activity to Copilot in Windows when Microsoft Edge is open and visible.

If you ask Copilot in Windows to summarize the contents of your active tab in Edge, Copilot in Windows first checks if you’ve provided that permission to the chat provider (for example, Microsoft Copilot). If you haven’t, Copilot in Windows asks for your permission to use the page content of your active tab in Microsoft Edge to provide its response.

If you’ve granted permission to the chat provider, Copilot in Windows won’t ask your permission again in the future when you want to summarize the contents of your active tab in Edge.

Note: You can change your permission selection at any time by going to Settings in Copilot in Windows and turning the toggle on or off.

When you grant permission to share page information, Copilot in Windows sends the page content, along with your request and your previous chat history, to Microsoft Copilot to help generate a meaningful response.

Copilot in Windows includes the URL even if you’ve chosen not to allow Copilot in Windows to use the Edge page content. In this scenario, the URL isn't saved.

Voice input

You can use your voice to chat with Copilot in Windows. A Microsoft online speech service converts your voice input into text, which Copilot in Windows submits to Microsoft Copilot. Microsoft doesn’t store your original voice input or the converted text as part of using the online speech service.

Users signed in with a work or school account

If you’re signed into your Windows device with a work or school account, Copilot in Windows can use one of the following chat providers:

  • Microsoft Copilot (previously named Bing Chat)

  • Microsoft Copilot with commercial data protection (previously named Bing Chat Enterprise)

  • Microsoft Copilot with Graph-grounded chat (previously named Microsoft 365 Chat)

The chat provider is the underlying service that Copilot in Windows uses to communicate with you. The chat provider platform is important because it's possible for you to copy and paste sensitive organizational information into the chat. Each chat provider has different privacy and security protections. For example, Microsoft Copilot is a consumer experience and doesn’t offer the same data protection as Microsoft Copilot with Graph-grounded chat.

The following sections provide more information about Microsoft Copilot with commercial data protection and Microsoft 365 Copilot with Graph-grounded chat. If your organization isn’t using either of these options, then Copilot in Windows uses Microsoft Copilot as your chat provider.

Microsoft Copilot with commercial data protection

Whether or not Copilot in Windows uses Microsoft Copilot with commercial data protection depends on whether your organization has the appropriate Microsoft plan and your IT admin has assigned you a license.

If your organization is using Microsoft Copilot with commercial data protection:

  • Your Copilot in Windows pane says "Your everyday AI companion with Bing" and you see this message: “Your personal and company data are protected in this chat.”

  • Chat history isn't available to you when using Copilot in Windows.

  • You can ask Copilot in Windows to summarize Microsoft Edge page content.

Microsoft Copilot with Graph-grounded chat

Whether or not Copilot in Windows uses Microsoft Copilot with Graph-grounded chat depends on whether your organization has a Microsoft plan that includes Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 and your IT admin has assigned you a license.

If your organization is using Microsoft Copilot with Graph-grounded chat:

  • Your Copilot in Windows pane says “For Microsoft 365” and you see this message: "Work content and chats cannot be seen outside your organization."

  • Your chat history can be found by using the Chat history icon within the Copilot pane.

  • You can’t use your voice to chat with Copilot in Windows.

  • You can’t ask Copilot in Windows to summarize Microsoft Edge page content.
